The hatching grounds were hot and dry. Under the sun's powerful rays with no shade, it was like a burning deathbed. This only made Michael "Six" Hayden like it more. He liked fire, plain and simple. Both firey and beautiful, fire was like his savior in a way. Whenever he was down, he lit a match or played with his lighter all day. It calmed his nerves, just by watching the small flame flicker. He could stare at it forever, but for now he had to put his lighter away and see if there were any Dragon eggs left in the clutch.
"You'd think that it would be easy to find these things, what with their scales and all. Better start searching,"
Six sighed and kneeled on his knees to start digging in the hot tan sand that could be covering the last Dragon egg. Would he be lucky, or would the last egg already be taken? Was he doing this all for nothing, just like being with Scout? He sighed and stopped digging, sitting back and looking at the palms of his hands.
"Her fingers fit perfectly between mine, like it was destined for us to be together. Fate had a funny way of ruining my life, huh?"
He thought, his eyes wandering down to his wrists. Fresh wounds and scars from old ones were scatted up and down his arms, showing him just how much cutting he had really done. At the time, he felt good for doing it. Now, looking back on it, he felt stupid and small. Being with Scout had made him feel this way, like she was his mother and he was just some pathetic child for her to take care of. He lied on his back then, squeezing his eyes shut to try and forget about her and all the great memories they had together. Hopefully, someone would come and save him from his own self pity.
