Air. The very essence that gave everything life. An element usually ignored or unappreciated, yet which held great power. Air in the oceans, lakes, and rivers gave fish life which in turn helped feed the hungry people to give them life. It filled the lungs of the people and animals, breathing life into them. Air, the very element that could either feed a fire or put it out. Air, without which no plant or vegetables would grow and without air there would be famine and death everywhere. Even in the Earth there was air churned among the soil. That was the power I now possessed, the power of Air. If I was lucky, maybe I’d grow strong enough to use my new powers to fly like the birds, high over the trees.
Walking along the dunes, I couldn’t help but smile. The wind was blowing in a gentle breeze and the small rippling I could see in the sand was natural and yet beautiful at the same time. Not only that, but walking barefoot allowed me to feel the sand squishing between my toes as I climbed the dune, working my way toward the top. The sand on the dune, though thick, was as moveable as sand anywhere else in the world. Air could blow it away, water could erode it, and only time would tell how long the dunes would exist. With the late afternoon sun shining down on me, I couldn’t help but to enjoy myself as I climbed the side of the dune, my feet sinking into the sand as I dug in my hands a few times, pulling myself to the top.
Once I got to the top, I sighed and wiped the sweat from my forehead. The view of the dune and the large body of water close to it was a true piece of beauty. Nature in one of its finest views. Personally, I liked standing there looking at the scenery displayed before me, but I’d came to the dunes to practice my new gift. To gain control over it and master it so I wouldn’t accidentally hurt someone or cause any damage because I lost control.
Blinking, I centered myself on top of the dune and took a deep, cleansing breath. Breathing in I felt my lungs and chest expand, filling with the very air that kept me alive. When I breathed out, my lips formed a somewhat pucker-like shape, almost as if I was going to kiss someone. The thought of me making out with an invisible person was amusing, and yes, for a moment I chuckled at such an idea, I admit. Though I know there were more pressing matters. If I didn’t gain control of my powers and strengthen them, I could be a real threat. A real danger to anyone and everyone around me. Some people would claim that mastery over their gifts came naturally. For me, however, not everything was easy. Things were rarely ever easy for me, so I just wanted a bit of practice.
The dunes I was standing on were known as the nesting grounds of dragons. Where those hoping to bond with a dragon came to find the egg of their bonded dragon. I didn’t know if I’d be one of those lucky chosen few, but getting a dragon shouldn’t be the only purpose for coming to the dunes.
Letting myself relax, I licked my lips and blinked, wanting to try a simple test. With my elbows bent and my hands out before myself, palms facing down toward the sand, I focused and began a silent chant of ‘ohmmmmmmmm…’ in my head. Doing so, I could feel the energy of my power flowing through me, filling every fiber of my being. At the same time, a tornado of sand whipped up around me. I, Donald, was standing in its center, hidden by the circulating walls of sand and wind hiding me like a veil as if to protect me. Personally, I rather enjoyed the feel of the magical energy in my body. The way it made me feel alive, awakened, and magical.
Taking another deep breath in, I lowered my hands, and in so doing returned the sand that had been in the cyclone that had been sweeping around me back to the dune. Blinking once more, I looked around the dune, my eyes being drawn toward the water and how beautiful it looked. Today would’ve been an excellent day for a swim, but I wasn’t sure if there would be currents in the water. Besides that, I hadn’t brought any swim suit. I’d have had to swim naked. If I swam naked and someone had discovered me, I’d have been embarrassed and was afraid they’d laugh, so I chose not to go swimming at this moment. Instead, I laced my own fingers together and cracked them, deciding to try another exercise.
Holding my right left hand palm up before me, I blew across my hand at the sand. Doing so made some sand before me separate and divide, almost as if I was beginning to blow a chasm or trench into the sand for some purpose. Seeing what was going on, I stopped before it was three inches deep, brows arched. I knew my affinity for air would come in useful and maybe, just maybe, with practice I’d learn how to fly. Licking my drying lips, I sat down on the dune, yawning. I hadn’t been sleeping well the past few days, and it definitely showed. My hair was a mess and I had a definite five o’clock shadow of stubble on my face. Wondering if the water I saw was fresh water, I forced myself to stand and headed toward it, unaware of what destiny awaited me....
